Getting There & Getting About

International Airports

Internal Transport

Uzbekistan has a number of regular domestic flights connecting the country's major towns and cities. There are airports at Namangan (flights taking 100 minutes from Tashkent), Navoi (1 hour from Tashkent), Nukus (2 hours from Tashkent), Samarkand (40 minutes from Tashkent) and Termez (80 minutes from Tashkent).

The Trans-Caspian Railway crosses the country from Chardzhou in Turkmenistan via Kagan (near Bukhara), Samarkand and Dzhizak, where the railway branches off to serve the capital, Tashkent. There are two railway stations in the capital - North and South. There are railways linking Bukhara, Samarkand, Termez, the Fergana Valley and Nukus. Visitors should be aware that possessions on trains can be vulnerable to theft and compartment should not be left unattended.

The country has a reasonable road network, although car hire facilities have not yet been introduced. Bus services connect all major towns, and are fairly reliable and cheap. Anyone wishing to travel to Termez and other areas of the Surkhandarya region must obtain a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tashkent. This will usually take around five days to process.

Taxis may be found in all major towns; visitors are advised to use the safer officially licensed vehicles, and to agree a fare in advance. It should be noted that as many street names have changed since independence, it's a good idea to ask for both the old and the new names when taking a taxi or when simply seeking directions.

Tashkent is served by trolleybuses, trams and underground.
