Culture & Etiquette
Dress conservatively and abide by local codes. A heartfelt handshake is a customary greeting. Always remove shoes before entering a house, mosque or sitting on a chaikhana bed. A gift from abroad, such as postcards, coins, or a photo from home, will be greatly appreciated as a sign of friendship.
Bread is sacred and should be broken up and passed around, and never placed face down (keep the seeded side uppermost) or thrown away. Tea is poured three times into piala cups and back to the pot before being served.
You should be aware that any form of photography can upset the authorities, especially near airports, military barracks and police stations.
Possession and use of drugs is illegal; prison sentences can be lengthy.
