Food & Drink

Turkmenistani cuisine is based on Central Asian staples such as:

  • plov (mutton, shredded yellow turnip and rice)
  • shashlyk (char-grilled mutton kebabs served with flat bread and raw onions)
  • shorpa (meat and vegetable soup)
  • manty (like ravioli, with a meat filling)

A particular speciality is ishkiykli - dough balls filled with meat and cooked in hot sand.

Alcoholic drinks widely available. Kefir, a thick, drinking yoghurt, is served with breakfast.
