Internal Transport
There are a number of good domestic flights connecting Tunis with other towns such as Djerba, Sfax and Tozeur. However, services are normally heavily subscribed, so it is a good idea to book ahead.
Ferries operate between Jerba Island and Jorf regularly during the day, and between the Kerkennah Islands and Sfax twice daily.
There is a regular train service that connects Tunis with major towns, with the main route running between Tunis and Gabès, via Sousse, Sfax and Gafsa. Trains are often air-conditioned and provide a buffet car. Travellers must purchase a ticket before boarding the train or they may be charged double the fare.
Tunisia has an excellent road network, although car hire does tend to be rather expensive. Speed limits are 50 kph (30 mph) in towns and 110 kph (60 mph) on major highways. The Garde Nationale (National Guard) will assist breakdowns free of charge (they usually contact the nearest garage). Travellers wanting to drive in the Sahara MUST first contact the National Guard post at the nearest town, giving them the planned itinerary and the expected point of exit from the area. An experienced guide is also necessary for any travel in the Sahara.
There are air-conditioned national buses (green and yellow) that travel daily to most towns across the country. Other services include the intercity buses which are inexpensive and reasonably comfortable. Destinations are written in Arabic and French on the front of the bus.
Louages (long-distance taxis) serve the whole of Tunisia and are the quickest form of public road transport. Authorised to carry five passengers, louages have no fixed schedule and simply leave their respective departure points when full. Prices are approximately the same as buses and trains
Within Tunis and other cities, city taxis are available for urban travel Fares are metered, although there is usually a 50% surcharge on night fares. Tunis and Sousse have a convenient and modern tram system (métro léger), and Tunis also has a suburban train line (TGM) that links the city with the northern suburbs. Motorcycles and bicycles are available for hire in most major towns and do not require a licence.
