Internal Transport
There are 2 daily flights from Piarco (Port of Spain) to Tobago (Crown Point); however, these are often heavily booked, particularly during Carnival time. There is also a daily car ferry/passenger service, which takes approximately 6 hours to run from Port of Spain to Tobago (Scarborough). The journey from Port of Spain takes place in the day, and gives a good view of the two islands; however, the return journey from Tobago is overnight, and can be uncomfortable.
Cars may be hired from Trinidad (Port of Spain) and Tobago (Scarborough), at the airport or through hotels. In Tobago, the roads, though narrow in parts, are good and the majority of the island is easy to reach. There is a major highway (Claude Noel Highway) running east-west. Care should be taken when driving in more rural areas, as chickens and sheep may wander across roads. The road network in Trinidad is also good, with two major highways running east-west and north-south. However, traffic around Port of Spain can be difficult during rush hour.
There is no rail network, and towns are connected by a bus service, which although cheap, is also crowded and somewhat unreliable. In Tobago, there are regular bus services between Scarborough bus station and Crown Point, Buccoo, Plymouth and Roxborough.
Route taxis and Maxi taxis have fixed rates and serve standard routes within Trinidad, particularly around Port of Spain, starting their route from Independence Square. In Tobago, Route taxis can be stopped anywhere along most major routes; drivers will indicate they have room by sounding their horn. Hiring a private taxi is much more expensive but gives visitors the freedom to travel where they want.
