Internal Transport
There are daily train services between Kpalimé and Lomé; Atakpamé, Blitta and Lomé; and Aného and Lomé. There are also some ferry services along the coast.
Although car hire is available in Lomé, it is very expensive elsewhere, and it often works out cheaper to hire a taxi. There are tarred roads that run to the border countries and the major northern route is called 'The Highway of Unity'. There are poorer roads linking other settlements, which become largely impassable during the rainy season. Drivers will find that there are frequent police checkpoints, which may cause delays. It is recommended that car doors are kept locked and windows rolled up whilst travelling.
There is a reasonably efficient and cheap national bus, minibus and taxi system. Minibuses and taxis are widely available in Lomé and shared taxis are available between towns. Bicycles can be rented in large towns and often result in fewer delays than cars.
