Culture & Etiquette
Dress is smart in Tanzania.
The more Kiswahili you know, the more delighted the locals will be; greet and reply to individuals with 'Jambo'.
When handing people something or eating, do so with the right hand. Using the left hand is frowned upon and discouraged. If your right hand is busy, wet or dirty when about to do a handshake you are expected to offer the wrist or any other part of the right arm. When eating, Tanzanians will always wash their hands and eat with only their right hand, often from communal plates.
