Internal Travel
Syria has some cheap domestic flights connecting Aleppo, Latakia, Deir ez Zor, Palmyra and Qamishli.
The country also has a 2,200 km-long railway line, with services operating between Damascas, Aleppo, Deirez-Zar, Hassakeh andKamechli. A second line runs between Deraa, Damascas, Homs, Tartous, Banias, Latakia and Aleppo.
Although Syria has 25,887 km (16,086 miles) of roads, second-class routes are unreliable during the wet season and traffic systems are poor, resulting in many accidents. The principal north-south route is Aleppo to Damascus and Dar'a.
There is a cheap, widely-used bus service running from Damascus and Aleppo to most towns. Shared taxis are also available to all parts of the country, costing around 50 to 70% more than buses.
Taxis and buses are also widely available for travel within cities. Taxi fares should be agreed in advance, unless they are metered. Buses outside the capital may not display destination signs in European script, which can make travelling rather difficult.
