Suriname

Flag of Suriname

The Republic of Suriname, (sometimes written as Surinam or Sranang) is a country in northern South America that is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south and Guyana to the west (the most southern parts of the borders with Guyana and French Guiana are disputed). Suriname lies on the Atlantic coast and is the smallest sovereign state (in terms of both area and population) in South America. It was formerly a Dutch colony, when it was known as Nederlands Guyana or Dutch Guiana.

Suriname has an extraordinary ethnic variety deriving from Dutch colonisation, the importation of African slaves and an influx of indentured labourers from India and Indonesia. Its capital is rich with Dutch colonial architecture and there's a well-ordered system of nature parks and reserves.
