Internal Transport
Harbour cruises and ferry services to Singapore's islands, Malaysia and the Indonesian Riau islands may be found at the ferry terminals located at the World Trade Centre (about 10 minutes' drive from the city centre) and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal at Changi. A ferry for Sentosa, the most popular offshore island, leaves every 20 minutes.
There are well-maintained and regular train services between all major cities and towns, and a well-developed system of local bus services. Singapore also has one of the most advanced metro systems in the world, with stations served on average every six minutes. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) has over 40 stations that link the city centre to the suburbs and to Changi Airport, providing an opportunity to visit some of Singapore's attractions along the three main routes.
Singapore has an excellent road system, and there are several car hire firms with offices at the airport and in hotels. All motorists driving into the city or travelling on some major roads are required to pay Electronic Road Pricing (ERP).
Taxis are numerous and relatively cheap and may be flagged down in the streets or picked up from outside hotels and official ranks. They are metered, although it may be possible to negotiate hourly rates for round-island tours.
A fun and exciting way to tour the streets of Singapore is by trishaw, the traditional form of chauffeur-pedalled transport.
