Culture & Etiquette
Each ethnic group has maintained its individual culture and identity, yet is integral to the community. Formal courtesies should be observed. Remove shoes before entering a home, temple or mosque. Gifts are appreciated. Dress is informal, although a smart appearance is expected for restaurants and meetings.
There are severe penalties for all drug offences in Singapore and a wider range of lesser offences, such as 'outrage of modesty' (inappropriate behaviour by men towards women), carries corporal punishment (the rattan cane). Strict laws also cover jaywalking, littering, and chewing gum in urban areas. Smoking is discouraged - smoking in any public place or indoor restaurant can lead to an on-the-spot S$500 fine.
