Good Time to Visit

Weather

The main dry season is from early June to late September, whilst a shorter dry season runs from the end of December to the start of February (known as Pequenha Gravana). The rest of the year sees heavy rainfall.

High temperatures are experienced throughout the year, with the south of the main island, being mountainous, wetter than the north. (More information can be found in Climate in São Tomé and Príncipe).

Visitors are advised to bring tropical clothing and lightweight cottons throughout the year. Light waterproofs or umbrellas are a good idea for the rainy season.

Festivals

Theatre has an important place in local life and each island has its own form of traditional dance and mime. The Auto de Floripes (in Sao Tome) and the Tchiloli (in Principe) date back to the sixteenth century and often relate the Tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua and the Emperor Charlemagne: the lead roles are passed on from father to son.
