Local Media

The Gulf Times, Qatar Tribune and The Peninsula are the main English-language newspapers. Local-language papers include Al-Sharq (The East), Al-Rayah (The Banner) and Al-Watan (The Homeland).

The state owns Qatar TV, which operates the main Arabic service, and also offers a Koran channel, English channel and satellite channel. The government also finances Al-Jazeera, the influential pan-Arab satellite broadcaster, which became known worldwide after becoming the first channel to air recorded statements by Osama Bin Laden after the beginning of US strikes against Afghanistan in October 2001.

The state-run Qatar Broadcasting Service (QBS) broadcasts radio programmes in Arabic, English, French and Urdu. The BBC in Arabic, Radio Monte Carlo, Radio France Internationale, US-backed Radio Sawa and UAE-based MBC are also available on FM in Doha.
