Internal Transport
There are some internal flights, although they are prone to disruption from weather conditions. Popular services include the trip to Iguazú Falls from Asunción, and air-taxis for discoving the Paraguayan Chaco.
There are no rail or boat services running in Paraguay.
There is an ongoing programme to upgrade the major roads, and the ones serving main centres are generally in good condition. However, un-surfaced roads, which make up approximately 90% of Paraguayan roads, may be impassable in bad weather, particularly between November and April. Potholes are a hazard, especially in Asunción. There is a highway that connects Asunción with Iguazú Falls; a drive that takes approximately 6 hours. Cars can be hired at the airport or through local tourist agencies. Driving at night is not advisable, and travellers should always keep doors locked.
Express bus services link the major centres, and are often the cheapest method of transport within Paraguay. Advance booking may be necessary for long journeys. Urban buses also operate within Asunción, with two-zone fares collected by conductors. There is also a tramway that operates two routes.
