Culture & Etiquette
North Korea has been described as the most closed society in the world. Discretion and a low political profile are advised.
When visiting places of national importance, such as statues of former leaders, it is important to dress smartly, as a sign of respect for North Koreans. Perceived insults to, or jokes about, the country's leadership or political system are severely frowned upon. In a few cases, visitors have found themselves in criminal cases for not paying what was deemed to be sufficient levels of respect.
Foreign mobile phones and Global Positioning Systems must be left with DPRK Customs on entry into the country and collected on departure.
Visitors may only take photographs when permitted by a guide or a North Korean official. Taking photographs after having been told not to can have serious implications.
Tipping is officially frowned upon, but is increasingly expected by some hotel staff.
