Local Media
There are no newspapers in English, although there are French-language papers, such as the state-run daily Le Sahel, and the weekly Le Republicain.
There are also a number of television channels, including the state-run Tele-Sahel, the pay-TV Telestar and the Niamey-based Tenere.
However, owing to low literacy levels, radio is the most important outlet for news and information. La Voix du Sahel is the state-run, national station, which broadcasts in French, Arabic, Hausa and vernacular languages. BBC World Service is available on FM in the capital and in Zinder, and Radio France Internationale operates FM relays in the capital Niamey, and in Zinder and Maradi provinces. There are also a number of private radio stations, including:
- Africa No 1
- Anfani FM
- Horizon FM
- R&M (Radio et Musique)
- Tambara FM
- Tenere FM
