Weather

Nicaragua has a tropical climate, with average annual temperatures ranging from 15°-35°C according to altitude.

There is a rainy season from May to November when humidity is high; the dry season runs from December to May. The average annual rainfall at Managua is 115 cm. Nicaragua is also subject to devastating hurricanes.

Visitors are advised to bring linens and lightweight cottons, with warmer clothing for the northern mountains. Waterproofs are needed from May to November.

Festivals

The most popular celebration is La Purisima, which takes place all over the country as a celebration of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Devotees go from house to house singing special songs. Independence from Spain is marked on 15 September, whilst 19 July marks the anniversary of the 1979 Revolution. Religious festivals follow the Christian calendar.
