The Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bounded to the west by Romania (across the Prut river), and to the north, east and south by the Ukraine. After being annexed by the Soviet Union, it was known as the Moldavian SSR from 1945, before finally declaring its independence in 1991.
