Internal Transport
There are helicopter services operating between Malta and Gozo, taking just 10-15 minutes. The alternative is the regular car ferry system that connects the two main Maltese islands, via the harbours of Cirkewwa and Marsamxett in Malta, and Mgarr in Gozo. Services to Comino operate from mid March to mid November. There are also regular ferry services between the Grand Harbour and neighbouring Sicily. There is also a ferry service to Comino that stops at Mgarr, Gozo and Cirtewwa, run by the Comino Hotel. This service is free to hotel residents, with a small charge for non-residents.
Car ownership in Malta is the fourth highest in Europe, given the small size of the islands. Like in the UK, traffic drives on the left. The roads are in good condition, and cars may be hired through international firms at the airport, or via local firms elsewhere. Rates are among the cheapest in Europe. The speed limit is 50 kph (30 mph) in residential areas and 80 kph (50 mph) on highways.
The old Maltese buses, formally ex-British Armed forces vehicles, are Malta's main domestic mode of transportation. There are some good local services operating from Valletta and Victoria (Gozo) to all towns.
Taxis are identifiable by their all-white livery; it is often best to agree prices before departure.
