Culture & Etiquette
Malaysia's population is a mixture of diverse cultures and characters, but is predominantly Muslim and so Islamic religious customs should be respected. Dress should be modest; some regions may enforce a stricter Muslim code than others, especially in rural areas. If you are a Muslim you should be aware that you may also be subject to local Shari'a law.
There are severe penalties for all drug offences in Malaysia, including whipping, a custodial sentence, and even the death penalty. You may be asked to take a urine test on arrival in Malaysia if you are suspected of having used drugs before your visit, and should the test prove positive, you could be deported.
Local handshakes may be perceived as weak or limp. However, this is the Malay style, sometimes simply a brushing of fingertips against each other and bringing the hand back to the heart or the lower part of the face or mouth. This signifies that the greeting has been accepted with sincerity.
