Hotel restaurants and many of those in the cities are of a high standard. Fresh fish from Lake Malawi is popular; chambo (tilapia) being the main lake delicacy. River trout and local beef are also notable. Street stalls in Lilongwe Old Town serve cassava chips and roast meat.

Malawi has some good local beers; other popular drinks include wines imported from South Africa and the well-known gin and tonic.
