Good Time to Visit
Weather
The climate in Madagascar is hot and subtropical, although can be much colder in the mountains. The rainy season is from November to March, whilst the dry season runs from April to October. Monsoons bring storms and cyclones to the north and east from December to March. The mountains, including the capital, Antananarivo, are warm and thundery from November to April and cool, dry and windy the rest of the year. (More information can be found in Climate in Madagascar).
Visitors are advised to bring lightweight clothing throughout the year in the north and south, and during the summer (November to April) on high central plateaux. Warmer clothes are recommended for the evenings everywhere, and during winter in mountainous areas. Waterproofs will be needed during the rainy season (November to March).
Festivals
There are a wide variety of events, from national celebrations to more localised festivities. These sometimes feature Malagasy singers, known as mphira gasy, who sing and dance in theatrical groups. Big occasions include Alahamady Be, the New Year, celebrated in March.
