Internal Transport
Latvia has a reasonable rail network, which includes routes from Riga to all other major towns in the country.
There are also good road connections from Riga to all parts of the country. Car hire is available from international and local car hire companies, and also through hotels. The minimum age for drivers to hire a car is 21. It is compulsory to drive with headlights on 24 hours a day all year round. Speed limits are 50 kph (32 mph) in cities and 90 kph (56 mph) on highways.
There are bus connections to regions throughout the country.
The capital city, Riga, has a good network of bus, tram and trolleybus routes; tickets must be purchased on board and kept for inspection. Fines for fare dodging are common. There are some trams and trolleybuses running through the night. Metered taxis are privately run; there is a surcharge at night. Share-taxis (taksobussi) also operate; these are cheaper than normal taxis, but slightly more expensive than ordinary buses.
