Food & Drink

Traditional Kazakh food revolves around horse meat and mutton and as well as various milk products. Among the most popular dishes are:

  • besbarmak (boiled meat and small pieces of pastry boiled in broth and sprinkled with parsley and coriander)
  • kazi and chuzhuk (horsemeat sausages)
  • kuirdak (dish made from roasted sheep's liver, kidney, heart, lungs and fat)
  • laghman (noodles with a spicy meat sauce)
  • lepeshka (round, unleavened bread)
  • shashlyk (skewered, grilled mutton)
  • plov (mutton, rice and yellow turnip)

Kazakhstani chai (tea) is popular. Beer, vodka, brandy and wines are available, but the speciality is kumis - fermented mare's milk.
