Culture & Etiquette
Jordan is a Muslim state and visitors should exercise discretion in dress and behaviour to avoid offending local sensitivities, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas.
Homosexuality is illegal under Jordanian law, and public displays of affection between a homosexual couple could result in arrest and prison sentences.
It is polite to ask permission to take photographs of people and livestock, and in some places photography is forbidden.
The working week is from Sunday to Thursday.
Jordanians are proud of their Arab culture and hospitality. Visitors are made to feel very welcome and Jordanians are happy to act as hosts and guides, and are keen to inform tourists about their traditions and culture. Arabic coffee will normally be served continuously during social occasions. To signal that no more is wanted, slightly tilt the cup when handing it back, otherwise it will be refilled.
