Internal Transport

Jamaica has a good network of internal flights between Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio.

The country's rail service has been suspended with no plans to resume a scheduled service. However, Jamaica's road system is good, and car hire is easily available in most major towns and airports. (Note: there is a general consumption tax of 15% on all car hire transactions). Approximately one-third of the country's 17,000 km (11,000 mi) of roads are tarred. Speed limits are 30mph (48kph) in towns and 50mph (80kph) on highways.

Perhaps the cheapest and quickest way of getting around the island is by route taxi; these vehicles have red plates marked PP (Public Passenger) and drive designated routes, picking up passengers on the way. A fixed rate is normally charged (check before embarking) and a 10% tip is usually expected. Taxis can also be ordered from hotels.

Coach and minibus tours are bookable at most hotels, and JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travellers Association) is the main provider of scheduled and unscheduled minibus and vehicle charter services.

Boats and yachts can be hired on a daily or weekly basis, and there are also a number of local operators running cruises and yacht tours around the island.
