The Roman Catholic church is a major influence and family ties are stronger than in most other countries in Western Europe.

Although the Italians are a very expressive people who illustrate their conversations with a great amount of gesticulations, you should be aware that some gestures are considered rude. For example, slapping your raised arm on the inside of the elbow or thumbing your nose are both seen to be very offensive, and raising your hand or fingers may also be considered as rude.
