Governorates
Iraq is divided into eighteen governorates (or provinces) (Arabic: muhafadhat, singular - muhafadhah), which are subdivided into qadhas (or districts).
Each of the 102 districts is enclosed fully within one of the 18 governorates as shown in the list below (governorate capitals are noted in brackets).

The new constitution of Iraq provides for regions to be created by combining one or more governorates. There is currently only one Region in existence - Iraqi Kurdistan - and there are proposals for one or more further regions to be created in the south.
