The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently advising against all travel to within 100 km of the entire Iran/Afghanistan border or to within 10 km of the entire Iran/Iraq border. The Pakistan border area is also insecure, and they advise against any travel east of the line running from Bam to Bandar Abbas.

Visitors planning to travel to Iran should monitor political developments closely and check travel advice regularly.

There is a threat from terrorism throughout Iran. Attacks could be indiscriminate and against civilian targets in public places including those frequented by foreigners, particularly Western interests.

Visitors should avoid demonstrations and similar large public gatherings, as some may turn violent. There have been several violent attacks on, and violent demonstrations outside, the British Embassy compounds in Tehran, most recently in April 2007.

Islamic law is strictly enforced in Iran. Visitors should also be aware that photography near military and other government installations is strictly prohibited, and anyone failing to adhere to this may be detained and may face serious criminal charges, including espionage, which can carry the death penalty.

Iran is also prone to earthquakes; many people have died in recent years in larger earthquakes and small tremors occur frequently.
