Few people speak English outside of the large hotels, large restaurants and tourist offices, particularly outside of Budapest. A knowledge of German can be useful.

You must be able to show some form of identity if requested, for example, by the police. Carry your passport or photo-driving licence at all times; a photocopy is not acceptable.

In the capital, be wary of unscrupulous taxi drivers.

Smoking is prohibited on public transport in towns and in public buildings, but smokers may light-up on long-distance trains.
