Good Time to Visit

Weather

Honduras has a tropical climate in coastal areas, temperate in the centre and west, with cooler weather in the mountains. There are two wet seasons in upland areas: May to July and September to October.

The interior has variable temperatures ranging from 15 to 24°C; on the coastal plains the average is about 30°C, although this is tempered by offshore breezes.

Visitors are advised to bring linens and lightweight cottons, with warmer clothes for the mountains and between November and February. Waterproofs are needed for the wet season (approximately May to October).

Festivals

Independence from the Spanish is celebrated each year on 15 September, and starts early in the morning with marching bands. Each band wears different colours, and are joined by cheerleaders who dance all over the streets. Fiesta Catracha takes place this same day; during this event there are typical foods such as beans, tamales, baleadas, yucca with chicharron, and tortillas.

The Fiesta de San Isidro is held in La Ceiba in May for a week, where lavishly dressed locals parade the streets. The Fiesta of San Antonia, in the banana port of Tela starts with people setting off firecrackers at 4 am, making sure no-one is sleeping. Parades and events follow for a week. Danli goes mad on the last weekend of August for the Corn Festival, where cultural and sporting events give way to an all night street party.

February 3rd is the celebration of the Patron Saint of Honduras, the Virgin of Suyapa.
