Getting There & Getting About

International Airports

Internal Transport

There are frequent internal flights between Tegucigalpa and major towns, along with services to Utila, one of the Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast. There are also several ferry sailings a week from La Ceiba and Puerto Cortés to the Bay Islands.

There are only three railways, mainly used for transport between plantations. However, visitors can take a trip to Cuero y Salado National Park on a coconut train, and from San Pedro Sula on a banana train.

Honduras has some all-weather roads and car hire is available at the airport. All-weather roads include one from Tegucigalpa to San Pedro Sula, Puerto Cortés, La Ceiba and towns along the Caribbean coast, and to the towns around the Gulf of Fonseca in the south. Other roads are poor, and are often blocked by rockslides and flooding during the rainy season. Travellers are advised not to drive at night as animals often wander onto the road, and many other vehicles drive without lights on.

There are a number of cheap local buses services running to most large towns; these are often very popular and booking in advance is recommended. Taxis are also available; these are not usually metered and so fares should be agreed in advance.
