Due to the threat to personal security, especially in the captal of Port-au-Prince, it is not currently advisable to travel to Haiti unless on essential business. If you do visit, you are advised not to walk in the streets of Port-au-Prince during the day (and especially at night) and to always travel with vehicle doors locked and windows up. It is not safe to go out after dark in Port-au-Prince, and some areas should be avoided at all times, particularly the Cite Soleil district of the capital.

However, the security situation is somewhat better in cities outside the capital, with the exception of Gonaives and to a lesser extent, Cap Haitien. Many ex-pats live in Bourdon and Petionville and the areas are regarded as relatively safe during daylight hours.
