Internal Transport
Although there are a number of scheduled domestic flights routes between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, Hinche and Jérémie, cancellations and delays are common.
There are cargo ships operating between Port-au-Prince, Jérémie and Cap-Haïtien, which can take passengers between these ports. Sailing trips can also be arranged from Port-au-Prince to beaches around the island.
There are all-weather roads from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haiten and Jacmel, and cars may be hired in Port-au-Prince and Pétionville or through hotels and the airport. Buses travel from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes, Jacmel, Jérémie, Hinche and Port-de-Paix on an unscheduled basis, and camionettes (station-wagons) run between Port-au-Prince and Pétionville.
Shared taxis (publics) are the cheapest form of taxi service within towns. Private taxis are un-metered, with fixed route prices; drivers can also be hired by the hour or the day (agree fares in advance in these cases). Taxi drivers do not expect tips. Tap-taps, (buses that run within Port-au-Prince) charge a standard rate for any journey; however, these crowded services are not recommended for travellers.
