Culture

Like many other West African countries, Guinea has a rich musical tradition, and Conakry, in particular, is a dynamic centre for music. The singing of the Kindia people is especially renowned.

The Vancouver-based guitarist Alpha Yaya Diallo hails from Guinea and incorporates its traditional rhythms and melodies into his original compositions, for which he has won two Juno Awards (Canadian music awards).

Guinea's main sport is football (soccer) and the national team has appeared at eight African Nations Cup finals; it was a runner-up in 1976 and in the quarterfinals in 2004 and 2006. Swimming is popular near the capital, Conakry.
