Must See
Bissau
Although not abundant with sightseeing opportunities, this relaxed and pleasant capital has some interesting architecture and a good museum, the Museum of African Artefacts. This houses some interesting exhibits of traditional pottery, sculpture, basketware and weaving. Close by, the colourful, covered central market has a lively ambience. The Portuguese quarter, with its Mediterranean-style houses and winding streets, is also worth a visit.
Bijagos Archipelago
The Bijagos archipelago comprises a group of small islands, some uninhabited, and all infrequently visited by foreigners. Of these, the island of Bolama - once the country's capital - has some fine beaches and some attractive ruins. Although there is no accommodation, camping is an option. Bubaque, a former Portuguese favourite is accessible by motorised pirogue and offers accommodation in the town.
Buba
This transport hub of the south has some pleasant swimming beaches and waterfalls nearby. The Falls, on the Rio Cirubal, turn to mere rapids in the dry season, but are extremely popular during weekends and school holidays at other times.
Gabu
Guinea-Bissau's eastern capital is also the Fula and Muslim capital. It has a lively commercial centre, largely due to its trade with nearby Guinea and Senegal.
Jemberem
In Jemberem, visitors can enjoy wildlife spotting in an area of unspoilt tropical rainforest. It's central to a community-based conservation project, the Cantanhez Natural Park, set up to protect birds, monkeys and chimpanzees. This lush and sacred forest is best navigated with a guide, which can be arranged through the local chief.
