Culture & Etiquette

Guatemala has a Spanish influence, but also a strong ethnic culture, as the only Central American republic with a predominantly Indian population.

Dress is conservative, although casual wear is suitable except in the smartest dining rooms and clubs.

Full names should always be used when addressing acquaintances, particularly in business.

Always ask before taking photographs of people, particularly of young children. Check with an adult that this is acceptable; and refrain from doing so if in any doubt.
