Internal Transport

There are limited domestic air services between Accra, Kumasi and Tamale and a 1,000km (600-mile) loop rail network by the coast, which connects Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi and several other coastal strip towns. There is also a rail link between the two main ports of Takoradi and Tema, with trains running at least twice a day.

There is a twice-weekly lake steamer (Yapei Queen) that sails across Lake Volta between Akosombo and Yeji, with ferries connecting at Yeji for Buipe and Makongo.

Car hire is available in Accra but is extremely expensive. There is almost 40,000 km of roads, most of which are in good condition; however, they may be less satisfactory outside of the towns. The speed limit is 50 kph (31 mph) in towns and 80 kph (50 mph) outside of towns. State-run and private coach services such as Intercity STC connect all major towns, which may also be reached by bus or by tro tros (minibuses) from Kumasr.

Taxis are generally reasonably priced, and drivers do not expect tips. Tro-tros (minibuses) and mammy wagons (converted pick-up trucks) may also be used to travel within the cities and towns.
