Local Media
Gambia's private media face severe restrictions. A law passed in 2002 created a commission with the power to issue licenses and imprison journalists; in 2004, additional legislation allowed prison sentences for libel and slander and cancelled all print and broadcasting licenses, forcing media groups to re-register at high cost with radio stations and newspapers having to pay large licence fees.
All papers are published in English. Main papers include:

There is one, state-owned, national television station, which runs one channel (Gambia Television). There is also a private satellite channel called Premium TV Network.
Radio France Internationale is available via an FM relay, whilst the government-run Radio Gambia broadcasts tightly-controlled news, with programmes in English and vernacular languages. Other radio stations include the privately-run West Coast Radio, Radio 1 FM, City Limits Radio and Sud FM.
