Food & Drink
Typical Gambian dishes include:
- supakania ( okra stew)
- domodah (peanut sauce)
- yasa (fried chicken in onions)
- jollof rice or benachan (a mixture of spiced meat and rice with tomato puree and vegetables)
- base nyebe (rich stew of chicken or beef with vegetables)
- plasas (meat and smoked fish cooked in palm oil with green vegetables)
- chura gerte (boiled rice and peanuts, eaten for breakfast)
As Gambia is predominantly Muslim, all meats are halal, and pork is not offered on menus.
A good selection of wines, spirits and beers are available. The local speciality beer is Jul Brew, and palm wines made from distilled sugarcane or rice are also readily available.
