Internal Transport
There are domestic flights in summer from Tallinn to the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, although these can be quite expensive.
There are frequent ferry services between the mainland and islands.
Although the rail system in Estonia is underdeveloped, the major cities (Tillinn, Pärnu, Viljandi, Valga, Tapa and Tartu) are connected.
The country has a high density of roads, although there are not many major highways. Driving at night is best avoided as road signs are fairly small and not illuminated. Car hire is available from international and local companies at the airport or in Tallinn. Speed limits are 90 kph (55 mph) outside built-up areas (or 110 kph (68mph) in summer), 50 kph (31 mph) in built-up areas and 20 kph (12 mph) in residential areas.
Buses are the most important means of transport in Estonia and there is a wide network covering most of the country, including express services. The buses to and from Tallinn are generally quite fast, if somewhat overcrowded. Marshrut-taxis are minibuses that operate on fixed routes stopping on request. They can take up to 10 people.
Private taxis should be ordered from hotels, rather than hailed in the street, and fares should be agreed upon beforehand.
