Internal Transport

There are no scheduled domestic flights and no passenger rail services in El Salvador. However, the country is tiny (about the same size of Wales) and good bus services link the towns. Pickup trucks are an alternative method of transport to remote areas.

The majority of El Salvador's roads have now been repaired after the 2001 earthquakes, and about a third of the road system allows all-weather use. Car hire is available in San Salvador; however, car hijackings and burglaries are common (particularly targeting towards new cars and those with foreign plates); drivers are advised to travel only by day and with the doors locked at all times.

Taxis may be found within the towns; they tend not to be metered so a fare must be agreed beforehand. They may be hailed in the street, or are often found in the town square. Many large hotels have their own taxi services. Tipping is not necessary unless the taxi has been hired for the day.
