The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently advising against all travel to East Timor. The security situation in East Timor remains uncertain and could deteriorate at short notice. Renewed outbreaks of violence in February and March 2007 resulted in some fatalities, and there is the possibility of large-scale demonstrations taking place in Dili, especially during the election period which runs from April to June 2007. These have the potential to turn violent and visitors should take sensible precautions for their personal safety and avoid large crowds or demonstrations.

Anyone remaining in East Timor should restrict their movements and avoid the areas surrounding IDP (internally displaced persons) camps, government buildings (including the Palacio da Cinzas and Palacio do Governno) and the vicinity of the Comoro airport, including the airport road. They should also refrain from going outside after dark.
