Must See

Brazzaville

The colourful capital of the ROC lies to the west side of Malebo Pool on the River Congo. A number of attractive sites can be visited by the traveller including:

  • the vivid suburb of Poto Poto
  • the mystical Temple mosque
  • the National Museum
  • the lush Municipal gardens
  • the impressive Basilique Sainte Anne, built in 1949 by Roger Erell and known for its green tiled roof

Also of note is the house built for Charles de Gaulle during the war years when Brazzaville was the capital of Free France (also designed by Erell). Other features include the Marien Nguouabi Museum, Brazzaville Zoo and the Poto-Poto Art School.

South of Brazzaville

Situated six kilometres south of the capital are the Congo Rapids, the Loufoulakari Falls and the Trou de Dieu, which has panoramic views of this amazing landscape.

The Coast

The coast of the Republic of the Congo, part of the Cote Sauvage, has a number of good beaches, particularly located around the town of Pointe-Noire, which is also home to a lively evening market. Along the coast is Loango, the main departure point for the two million slaves transported from the country.

Gorges of Diosso

The sea and wind have combined to form these dramatic cliffs, known as the Grand Canyon of the Congo, and ranking among the Congo's most beautiful sights.

The North

Visitors travelling north from Brazzaville for 150 kilometres will arrive in the historic village of M'Be, once the capital of King Makoko. Lac Bleu, with plenty of good fishing opportunities, is also situated here. Also found in the north country are huge swathes of untouched forest bursting with wildlife and a number of indigenous tribes who still live the traditional life.
