Internal Transport

Côte d?Ivoire has an advanced rail service, and the Abidjan?Ouagadougou is possibly the most efficient in Africa. Trains run daily from Abidjan to Bouaké and Ferkessédougou, with children under the age of four travelling free.

The road system is excellent by West African standards, with 68,000km of roads, with about 10% of these surfaced. Petrol stations are frequent except in the north. However, drivers should be aware that there may be potholes and poorly lit vehicles on the road. Cars may be hired at the airport, and in Abidjan and other main towns.

There are a number of bush taxis and small, private buses operating throughout the country, which although may be overcrowded are usually very efficient. Taxis are also available in main cities; however, they may be in poor mechanical condition. Taxis in Abidjan are usually red and metered, with rates doubled between midnight and 6am.
