French is the official language of schools, cities and government. However, most Ivorians also speak the mother tongue of their native village and adhere to local traditions within their ethnic group.
Dress tends to err on conservative - men wearing long trousers and women wearing long skirts, dresses and trousers. The ban on wearing camouflage clothes by civilians is still in effect.
Snakes are regarded as sacred by some ethnic groups.
