Weather
The Czech Republic has a temperate climate with cold winters and mild summers. Spring and summer have the highest rainfall.
In Prague (elevation 197 m), average temperatures are at their lowest in January at -2°C (with a minimum of -13°C and a maximum of 10°C), and their highest in July, at 18°C (with a minimum of 9°C and a maximum of 32°C). Rainfall averages from 2 to 8 cm a month, with the greatest amounts falling from May to August (6 cm a month or more), with the lowest amounts (approximately 2 cm) falling from November to March.
Visitors are advised to bring lightweight clothing in summer, with mediumweights (and a good heavy coat) for winter.

Festivals
The Anniversary of Jan Palach's Death, a student who set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in 1969 as a protest over the Soviet invasion, is marked on 19 January. Witches' Night, a mix of Halloween and May Day festivals, is held on 30 April. Medieval activity takes over Prague in the first week of May as part of the Karlovy Vary Blessing of the Waters. Renaissance costumes and street parades flood the city in the third week of June for the Slavnost Petiliste Ruze.
