Internal Transport

Car hire maybe possible in Bujumbura, through Avis or local garages. Many roads are sealed; the main roads are east from Bujumbura to Muramvya and south to Gitega. However, road travel may be difficult during the rainy season. All roads outside of Bujumbura City are unsafe to travel, and visitors should exercise extreme caution when travelling on roads to Kayanza, Ngozi and Kirundo, as roads are often subject ambushes. Major roads are closed after 4pm.

Taxi trucks, or tanus-tanus, are available but crowded, and bus services are available in Bujumbura and main towns. Japanese-style minibuses operate between towns and are normally less crowded and cheaper than share-taxis; departures take place when the vehicle is full - normally from the bus station. The destination of the minibus is typically displayed in the front window.
