There are no domestic air services for travel within Brunei.
There is a well-developed road network in the Brunei-Muara district, including a coastal highway that runs from Muara to Jerudong and then on to Tutong. Self-drive or chauffeur-driven cars are available for hire at the airport and major hotels; you must specify if you want an air conditioned vehicle.
Water taxis are the most common form of transport in Kampong Ayer, Brunei's well-known water village. There are also water taxi services to Kampong Ayer, with stations at Jalan McArthur and Jalan Kianggeh. Other boat and water taxi services run between Bandar Seri Begawan and Bangar (in Temburong), also servicing some towns in the Malaysian state of Sabah, Limbang (in Sarawak), and Labuan. Fares are negotiable.
There is a good bus network, with vehicles running from Bandar Seri Begawan to Seria (91 km/57 miles), Tutong (48 km/30 miles) and Muara (27 km/17 miles). The Bandar Seri Begawan bus system is well maintained and inexpensive. There are six bus routes within the city, operating from 6.30am to 6pm; the station is located at the multi-storey car park on Jalan Cator in the town centre.
Taxis are also available from the multi-storey car park at Jalan Cator in Bandar Seri Begawan, and may also be hired at the airport and most hotels and shopping centres. Fares are normally metered; however, if not, rates should be agreed before commencing the journey. Tipping is not necessary. There is a 50% surcharge after 11pm for airport taxi services.
