The State of Brunei, Abode of Peace (Malay: Negara Brunei Darussalam) is a country located on the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. It is a constitutional sultanate, with a hereditary monarch, which became independent from the United Kingdom in 1984.

Brunei is strategically located on the South China Sea, close to vital sea lanes linking Indian and Pacific Oceans. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, it is completely surrounded by the states of Sabah and Sarawak, East Malaysia.
